RAM Prices Are Up 500% in a Year, and Home Server Builds Are Paying for It

If you priced out a home server last summer and then put it off, the bill has changed. Not by a little. Tom’s Hardware published a RAM price roundup on August 17 showing DDR5 kits selling for five times what they cost twelve months ago, and in one case ten times the lowest price the site has ever tracked. A 128GB DDR5-6400 kit that bottomed out at $329 now goes for $3,399.

That is easy to file under “PC gaming problem” and scroll past. It isn’t one. Memory is the first resource a hypervisor runs out of, and it is what ZFS quietly eats for breakfast. If the plan was 64GB in a TrueNAS box so you would never have to think about it again, that plan now costs roughly what the rest of the build does.

What the numbers look like

Tom’s Hardware tracks street prices against the lowest figure it has ever recorded for each kit. The gap right now is not subtle.

PCPartPicker’s twelve-month averages say the same thing from a different angle. A 2x32GB DDR5-5600 kit averaged $191 in August 2025 and $1,118 now, up 485%. The 6000 MT/s version of the same capacity went from $222 to $1,272, up 473%. Smaller 2x16GB kits are up somewhere between 355% and 429% depending on speed.

DDR4 was supposed to be the escape hatch. It wasn’t. Once DDR5 priced people out, demand shifted onto older platforms and pulled those prices up too. A 2x32GB DDR4-3200 kit went from $222 to $614 in a year, up 177%. Even 2x8GB DDR4-3600, the sort of thing you would throw at a secondhand office desktop, more than doubled from $75 to $165.

Europe is seeing it too, and storage is going with it

German site ComputerBase runs its own component price tracking and reports European RAM averages up 345% against September 2025. The same data shows hard drives and SSDs both up more than 125% over that period.

That second part matters more here than the first. A NAS build is memory plus a lot of storage, and both halves are climbing at the same time. Anyone costing out a four or six bay box right now is watching two lines move against them.

Why homelab builds take this harder than gaming PCs

A gaming rig with 32GB is comfortable. A hypervisor with 32GB is doing arithmetic.

Every Proxmox VE VM claims memory whether it uses it or not, and every extra container adds to the total. ZFS sharpens the problem: on TrueNAS, Unraid ZFS pools and Proxmox installs alike, the ARC treats free RAM as read cache and will use whatever you leave on the table. That is by design and it works well. It also means “just get 64GB and stop worrying about it” was advice built on 64GB costing around $200. At $849 for a 64GB DDR5-6000 kit, it reads differently.

ECC is the other sore spot. Tom’s Hardware does not publish ECC figures in its tracker, so there is no clean number to quote here, but ECC modules are cut from the same DRAM dies and are moving in the same direction. Anyone who has been told to buy ECC for a ZFS array is facing a bill that went up twice over: once on capacity, once on the ECC premium.

What people are doing instead

This is not buying advice, and nobody posting a price chart knows where the next twelve months land. The practical options are fairly plain, though.

  • Postpone. A delayed upgrade costs nothing beyond the irritation of running what you already have.
  • Buy less. 32GB runs a perfectly usable Proxmox host for a handful of services. The 64GB default was comfort, not requirement.
  • Cap the ARC. Proxmox and TrueNAS both let you set a hard ZFS ARC limit, which makes a smaller pool of memory behave predictably instead of competing with your VMs.
  • Prefer containers to full VMs. An LXC container or a Docker stack shares the host kernel and its memory, while a VM does not. Ten services in containers on 16GB is routine. Ten VMs on 16GB is not.
  • Look at used and ex-enterprise gear. Decommissioned server memory and off-lease workstations were already the cheap way into a homelab, and the gap has widened.
  • Reuse what exists. An old desktop with DDR4 already in the slots is worth more as a host today than it was a year ago.

How long this lasts, according to the people selling it

The squeeze traces back to AI. Tom’s Hardware reports that hyperscale buyers have locked up close to the entire world DRAM production capacity for 2027, paying deposits to secure supply. HBM manufacturing consumes huge numbers of DRAM layers, which cuts into how many standard memory chips get made at all. DRAM is now among the highest-value commodities on the planet by weight, with consumer chips worth more than half the price of gold per kilogram. PC and phone makers are left bidding on what remains, and they are not the priority customer.

The four manufacturers in this market, SK hynix, Samsung, Micron and China’s CXMT, have doubled, tripled or better their revenues inside a year.

On what comes next, the forecasts belong to executives with a stake in the answer, so they are worth attributing carefully. SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung has said 2027 will be the worst year in the industry’s history for memory supply, with demand outrunning his company’s production capacity until roughly 2030. ADATA president Simon Chen goes further, describing a DRAM crunch that could last another decade and rejecting the idea that an AI bubble is about to deflate. Neither statement is settled fact.

The knock-on effects are already reaching hardware this audience uses. Tom’s Hardware reports that Pine64 has suspended Linux hardware manufacturing until at least mid-2027 because of the shortages, which takes a familiar line of ARM and single-board gear off the table for a while.

Tom’s Hardware’s own read is that consumer prices only fall if the AI market contracts sharply, which would mean a serious correction across global markets. Whether that happens is not a question a component price tracker can answer, and it is not worth guessing at here. In the meantime, the cheapest RAM in your homelab is the RAM already sitting in a machine you own.
